“Steven’s writing helps me cross the chasm from philosophical to pragmatic in tech and marketing. Essential Reading.” -Taylor Pearson

Patterns of Profit is a newsletter that explores choices in business you didn’t even know you had. My goal is to help entrepreneurs choose better games to play rather than obsessing about how they play a particular game.

Here’s what I believe: now, more than ever, entrepreneurship is the most interesting game in the world. The sheer number of ways to play, the freedom it provides, is a vehicle for self actualization, wealth, and contribution.

Read a business book, however, and you might conclude there are only a few ways to play, that you have to follow specific steps and get them exactly right or you fail.

What is Patterns of Profit About?

“Steven’s newsletter offers offbeat insight into…things you may not have thought about. It’s a fresh, eclectic email and one of the few I stay subscribed to.” - Josh Hill

Patterns of Profit is a solo project from me, Steven Moody, exploring the patterns I’ve seen in businesses of all sizes. Some themes I expect to cover:

  • Why your choice of business name matters, but actually it doesn’t

  • How successful Lean Startups ignore the advice of the book “The Lean Startup”

  • The dominant marketing strategy every business can use (but most don’t)

  • Why most business owners burn out, and how you can keep it fun

  • Why most marketing hires fail

  • How to scale your business without dehumanizing your team

  • Never before published interviews with founders covering the hard lessons learned in their business

Who Reads Patterns of Profit?

“I have so little time to read and frequently unsubscribe from newsletters. However, Steven’s newsletter is so well researched and assembled, that I consider it to be required weekly reading.” - Sanjit Singh

My readers tend to be tech startup founders, digital nomad entrepreneurs, and aspiring entrepreneurs seeking real insights.
